The Summary display you see when you initially start MD is configurable: you pick what modules to show (assets, accounts, credit cards) and the order the modules appear. You can also set up non-transaction reminders to create notes that appear on the calendar. Reminder scheduling in MD is much richer and easier than in Q: number of days, weeks, months, years between transactions, specific days (1st, 2nd, 3rd day 1st monday, 3rd friday) and more. In Q you schedule transactions and sets of transactions, but in MD you set up a "Reminder" which was a confusing choice of name at first. MD's "autocomplete" essentially memorizes every transaction and as you're doing new entries it tries to guess what you need based on account, day of week, and more - and it does a great job! Much more useful and effective than Q's memorized transactions. I had to spend some time with Q & MD open side-by-side to reconcile the accounts. Apparently the final transaction in a account marked inactive or closed in Q would get skipped by the QIF export process. For starting balances in MD you edit the account and set the amount and date - but I found it clearer to have every account start with 0 and add a balance adjustment transaction.Ī number of very old credit card accounts came into MD with balances. As each is corrected the corresponding transaction is deleted from SavingsX and you can delete that extra account when it's empty. The solution is to go into the "real" account, set the filter at the top to uncleared, and change the category to something like "Balance Adjustment" from "SavingsX". This is really confusing at first as you suddenly have 36 accounts instead of 18 and the balances look wrong. When you import accounts with self-transfers, MD creates duplicate account names with an X appended (Savings & SavingsX) with the self-transfers in the X account. A problem comes up in that Q will have a transfer in an account back to itself - for a balance forward, or a balance adjustment. The biggest issue is that in Q a category is used to classify a transaction or set up a transfer. Frankly, I expect QXF to be the only option available soon as Q tries to lock customers in by holding their data hostage. These are entirely proprietary and cannot be opened by virtually anything except a legal copy of Quicken. It does its best to generate the full set accounts, categories, etc as specified by the file.Ī note here: the QIF layout has been well documented & understood for decades, but Q also provides "QXF" format files. In MD you create a new file then import the QIF. The resulting file can be opened in Notepad if you're nosy and contains lines representing the parts you chose to export (transactions, investments, categories, etc). To transfer data, you use File/Export/QIF in Q. You purchase a license code (I found a discount on Amazon) and register with an option on the Help menu to completely unlock. You can download the current version of MD from the company's website for Windows, Mac, or Linux and try it out with very few restrictions. Nor do I know what would change based on that.Moneydance (MD) was the closest replacement for Quicken (Q) I could find, so when I decided to leave Quicken (after over 25 years) due to the new "subscription" (and block 40% of the screen if you don't re-up) and bugginess I decided jump in and thought I'd share some experiences of our first weeks with MD: So I don't know if OFX is the only way or if there are others. But I don't know what protocols Direct Connect uses. From what I can find they are removing OFX support but keeping Direct Connect. But if they changed how the connection is handled then the software companies would need to do updates to handle that. If all they did was change the URL and require the accessID then I am set once I get the URL. So now I am trying to identify what is the new connection URL and did they fundamentally change the way that the connection is handled. I have not found that URL but I found references to. īut then you have to connect to another URL to authenticate. First you have to generate an accessID and PIN.
